A few more days had passed, and I was pretty sure Rick wasn’t letting me spend one more day in my room, so I mentally started preparing myself to re-enter the world and face this issue.

“Chanelle?” He called my name from the other side of my closed door.

“Yes?”

“Are you leaving your room today?”

“I was thinking about it,” I sat up on an elbow and flipped through TV channels.

“I’d love to see you today in something other than mismatched flannel pajamas.” He chuckled.

I rolled my eyes, even though he couldn’t see me. “Whatever.”

Rick cracked the door and peeked in. “And maybe, just maybe you might want to take a shower.”

With that, I let out a loud, offended laugh. “I can’t stand you.” I exclaimed, hurling a pillow at him.

Laughing with me, he closed the door. “I’m glad you have your spirit back.” I listened as his footsteps moved farther away from my door, as he retreated back down the stairs.

Heading toward my master bath, I was grinning like I’d won the lottery. I hated what was going on, but I loved having Rick in my house. I was still smiling after my shower. It had been days since Rick saw me in something presentable and, for my own confidence, I needed to look and feel attractive.

In my closet, I chose a denim wrap dress with the tags still hanging on it and a new pair of platform sandals. I completed the outfit with a colorful chunky necklace. I applied my makeup and styled my hair in a casual ponytail. I took one final glance in my full-length mirror. Perfect.

“Well, well, well. You look fantastic, Chanelle.” Rick sat in the recliner in front of the television and eyed me when I sauntered into the family room.

I lowered myself onto the end of the couch, suddenly shy. “Thank you. And thank you for coaxing me out of my room.”

“Any time.” He continued staring.

The heat between us filled the space of the room and threw my nerves off balance. “Um, you’ve been my babysitter for a while now. Are you ever planning to go back to work?

Sensing my discomfort, he looked away and at the television. “Max has everything under control so I can keep my schedule clear for you. And I was thinking that maybe we could go out for breakfast and...”

My brow edged upwards. “And what?”

He slowly rotated his head to me. “And go back to the gun range.” He raised his hand to stop my protest. “I know what happened last time. But this is something you need to be able to do. And you learn with practice. Plus, I’ll be there with you. So, I signed you up for a CPL class. They will perform your background check while we’re there and when you leave, you will be licensed to carry a gun.”

I closed my eyes, massaging my temples. I knew he was right, but what if we were tailed again? For that matter, what if he was outside now?
